For a global cosmetics brand known for its mineral complexion products, site performance had become more than a technical issue. The team was seeing ongoing performance problems, including slow page load speed, high bounce rates in some cases, and poor Core Web Vitals that could impact SEO, conversion, and the customer experience, especially on mobile.

Behind the scenes, the team was also navigating a newer organizational structure and a Shopify setup where oversized images or asset-heavy pages may have been slowing down key experiences. They knew the site was slow in places, but they didn’t need another performance report. They needed to understand where the slowdown was coming from, how it was affecting shoppers, and whether improving performance could drive measurable gains in conversion and revenue.

That's where Render Better came in. Using Render Better's site speed optimization platform, the brand ran an A/B test to measure the impact of a faster site experience against the existing baseline. The Render Better variation outperformed the baseline across conversion rate, revenue, and Largest Contentful Paint, showing a $2,485 daily contribution, 20x ROI, and nearly $1M in annualized upside.

The Challenge: Poor Core Web Vitals Were Slowing Down the Customer Experience

The brand knew site speed was an issue, but the problem went beyond slow load times. Their Core Web Vitals data showed that many URLs were not delivering a strong page experience, particularly on mobile. In Google Search Console, mobile performance included 39 poor URLs, 135 URLs needing improvement, and only 70 good URLs at the time of reporting.

Several issues were tied to key Core Web Vitals metrics, including Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS). On mobile, Google Search Console flagged:

  • 160 URLs with an LCP issue longer than 2.5 seconds
  • 39 URLs with a CLS issue greater than 0.25
  • Additional URLs needing improvement due to CLS issues greater than 0.1

Desktop performance also showed signs of concern, with 234 poor URLs, 11 URLs needing improvement, and 0 good URLs in the Core Web Vitals overview.

For an ecommerce brand, these issues matter because slow pages and unstable layouts can affect how shoppers browse, engage, stay on-site, and ultimately convert.

With a newer team structure in place, the brand needed clearer visibility into where performance issues were showing up across the site and how much they were costing the business.

The Solution: Testing Site Speed as a Revenue Lever

Render Better helped the brand move from diagnosing performance issues to measuring their business impact. Rather than relying only on technical performance scores, the team used Render Better's site speed optimization platform to run a server-side A/B test. The baseline represented the existing site experience, while the variation used Render Better to deliver a faster experience for shoppers.

This gave the team a controlled way to evaluate how site speed influenced actual ecommerce behaviour. Instead of treating Core Web Vitals as isolated technical benchmarks, the test connected performance improvements to commercial outcomes, including conversion rate, revenue, and Largest Contentful Paint. The goal was to answer a more strategic question:

If shoppers received a faster site experience, would that translate into measurable revenue impact?

Measuring the Impact

During the test period from January 1 to March 17, the brand’s online store saw significant ecommerce volume:

  • 2.67M online store sessions
  • $4.57M in total sales
  • 63,016 total orders
  • 2.33% conversion rate

At that scale, even a small improvement in site performance could create meaningful financial upside. The test compared the Render Better variation against the baseline experience across three key metrics: conversion rate, revenue, and site speed (Largest Contentful Paint).

The Results: Faster Site Speed, Higher Conversion, and Revenue Lift

The Render Better variation won across every key metric. In the split test, the Render Better variation improved conversion rate from 2.27% to 2.34%, representing a 3.07% lift compared to baseline.

Revenue also improved from $1.83 to $1.90, a 3.78% lift compared to the baseline experience. Because the test used an 85/15 split, the clearest comparison was not total revenue, but revenue performance between the baseline and variation groups.

At the same time, Render Better improved Largest Contentful Paint from 2.846 seconds to 2.534 seconds, an 11% improvement in page load performance.

The Render Better variation showed measurable gains across both ecommerce performance and Core Web Vitals.

Additional ecommerce data from the same period showed stronger performance among influenced shoppers, with a 2.33% conversion rate compared to 2.2% for the non-influenced segment. Based on the measured impact, Render Better contributed $2,485 per day. Annualized, that equals $907,025, representing nearly $1M in upside.

For the brand, this translated to a 20x ROI from Render Better's site speed optimization platform.

Why It Matters

Site speed is often treated as a technical issue, but for ecommerce teams, performance has a direct impact on revenue. A faster site can improve the shopper experience, reduce drop-off, and help more customers move through the journey from browsing to checkout. The challenge is that many businesses know site speed matters, but struggle to measure its commercial impact.

Without clear visibility into how performance influences customer behaviour, it can be difficult to prioritise optimisation efforts or demonstrate ROI to stakeholders. By connecting technical improvements directly to business outcomes, teams can make more informed decisions about where to invest and confidently justify performance optimization as a revenue-driving initiative, not simply a website enhancement.

The Takeaway

For this global brand, Render Better helped connect site performance to measurable e-commerce outcomes. The team was able to see how faster experiences influenced conversion rate, revenue, and overall business impact.

The results showed that site speed optimization was not just about improving load times. It was about creating a faster, smoother shopping experience that could drive meaningful revenue upside.

For enterprise ecommerce teams, that is the real value: the ability to make performance decisions backed by measurable commercial impact, not assumptions.
