High quality imagery and fast site speed matters a lot when you're selling to higher end shoppers who's decisions can change quickly with any sign of a poor shopping experience. Vitamin A, a luxury brand that sells Earth-friendly swimwear from recycled materials, struggled to find the perfect balance between site speed and ensuring images were not blurry. In the past, they had been told to compress their images, but this was not enough to improve site speed issues that were causing poor shopping experiences.
If you visit Vitamin A, you'll notice they use a multitude of high resolution images, Shopify apps, and third-party scripts, so optimizing for performance while maintaining the aesthetics and features was quite the challenge. CLS remains tricky to fully resolve, but performance is a balancing act - the fastest site is a blank one, but that won't tell a story or help sell your products. Plus, load times are the most important factor for picking up additional sales, and Render Better dramatically improved both FCP and LCP for mobile and desktop. At 1s and 1.5s respectively across all device types for real users, Vitamin A is blazing fast, resulting in less traffic bouncing, a smoother shopping experience, and more sales.
To prove this we set up a server-side split test with Google Optimize to test our optimizations. In the screenshots below, "Treatment" refers to our automatic optimizations turned on, and "Original" refers to them turned off. Overall, we improved conversions by 6.4% and revenue per session by 8.7%, proving that better web performance results in a better user experience and more sales.
